How To Become An Interior Decorator

The time is right to become an interior decorator. Part art, part science, interior decorating goes far beyond just making homes look pretty. Interior decorators have a profound impact on people's lives by creating the environment in which they work, play and live.

Much of interior decorating is problem solving. A rule of thumb is that no matter how identical two spaces may be, no two rooms are completely alike. Clients are different; electrical lay out can be different. Even the smallest difference can change a project radically. An interior decorating degree prepares you for all these vagaries of the business.

Interior decorating is academically defined as the finishing touches on an architectural interior. Lighting, furniture, decoration, and aesthetic design all fall under its wing. A good interior decorating program should introduce you to all of these components.Classes at an interior decorator school will include basic concepts of interior design, but also important elective subjects like drawing, sculpture and art theory so that you have the background to make exciting choices for a company or client. More intensive programs will also include computer-aided drafting and design, 3D design, space planning, problem solving, and the history of design and architecture.

As a graduate of an interior decorator school, you'll be prepared to build your career as a professional interior decorator in fields such as commercial and residential design, space planning, showroom management, and more.
