Graduate Art Schools
Many students who complete a bachelor's degree in art did so because they found the field extremely interesting. However, after graduating, a large portion of students transition into unrelated careers. Only a handful decide to pursue art fulltime. These are the ones who decide to complete a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at graduate art school.
How does graduate art school differ from undergraduate? If you're considering earning an MFA, you should be aware of the major differences between undergraduate and graduate courses. One crucial distinction is the level of attention you'll receive. Many of your classes will be one-on-one seminars with highly skilled professionals in very specialized fields. You probably won't take as many survey courses since most programs train you to become an expert in your specific medium. You'll also learn a lot more history and theory so that you'll be qualified to teach courses at the university level after your certification. Remember, the main goal of these programs is to produce future artists—not just enthusiasts.
What sort of job can I get? That really depends on the medium you choose and your level of dedication. However, many MFA graduates either go on to teach, create, or trade art. Job opportunities vary from field to field, but there will always be demand for good art. You might become an art teacher at a local university, or perhaps you'll become a restoration expert at a museum. |
