How To Become A Broadcast Technician

What does a broadcast technician do?
If you would like to become a broadcast technician you will find yourself working in the fast moving world of radio or television. Broadcast technicians are responsible for all the equipment involved in regulating the clarity, strength, color, sound and range of radio and television broadcasts. They set up, operate and maintain the broadcasting equipment. In addition they might also operate the many control panels which select the source of material, by switching from one camera to another, from studio to studio or from film to a live broadcast.

Most broadcast technicians are employed by radio and TV studios and as a result sometimes get to meet people who are nationally or regionally famous. They spend their time working with all kinds of electrical equipment and need to have an aptitude for this, as well as the manual dexterity needed to operate and maintain it correctly.

Broadcast technicians are often required to work evening hours and are sometimes in the studio or on outside broadcasts for more than forty hours a week. In addition they sometimes have to work to tight deadlines and must be able to cope with the extra pressure that this puts on them.

What education will help me become a broadcast technician?
The best way to prepare to become a broadcast technician is to take a certificate or degree course in broadcast engineering or broadcast technology at a school, college or university. A typical program like this would include subjects such as electronic media management, video production and design and electronic equipment operation and repair. Lots of schools offer students practical experience in their own television studio, or arrange an internship for them at a local television or radio station.
