How To Become A Radio Disc Jockey
If you want to become a radio disc jockey, then expect intense competition. This is a popular career choice, and you will be competing with many other talented people who also want to become a radio disc jockey. There are various things you can do in order to help your application and career path. Historically, many disc jockeys learned on the job with little or no formal training. This is no longer the case. With the increase in the number of broadcasting organizations and web based 'radio' stations, employers are looking for professional skills and qualifications to make their show stand out from the rest.
You may find that a minimum of a bachelor's is required by most employers to become a radio disc jockey. You could study broadcasting, journalism, or communications. Other things, which may help your application, include a proven interest in music, experience of public speaking, a pleasant speaking voice, drama, and computer literacy. If you can get experience on a campus, store, or hospital radio station then this experience will help your application immensely. If necessary, consider working unpaid to gain experience.
Most entry-level jobs will be with local radio stations. You may find that you start as a researcher, or a small announcing role such as reading weather forecasts, or sport results. As you increase the confidence of others in your ability, you may be given a slot during a "quiet time" to start with, e.g. late at night or mid afternoon. Most large radio stations vie with each other for listeners in the morning. The DJs who work these broadcasts are usually very highly experienced and highly paid. Few DJs actually choose their own music for a broadcast and generally have to follow prescribed play lists in accordance with the requirements of management and advertisers. |
