How To Become A Radio Personality
If you want to become a radio personality, then you will need some very special skills indeed in order to differentiate yourself from all the other applicants intent on following the same career path. You will need a bachelor's in communications, broadcasting, or journalism, as a minimum academic requirement. There are even specialist broadcasting schools that you could train in; some have also been to drama school. Other things, which could help you, are experience of public speaking, or drama and excellent communications skills. You will need a pleasant speaking voice; most radio stations require examples of your work and recordings of your voice when selecting new staff.
There is no prescribed way to become a radio personality, once you have the academic requirements. Your career will be based on your popularity with the listeners. This popularity may be based on any number of things. Some may be both measurable and acquired. Others may be based purely on the way you connect with the listeners. Some radio personalities are popular through a particular sense of humor or method of delivering newscasts. Others are even popular for being rude and antagonistic toward guests or people phoning into the program. This last delivery method is probably the most high risk!
If you really want to become a radio personality, you could start out on local radio, or even hospital, campus, or in-store radio as an announcer. Many people offer to work unpaid in order to start their career and get experience. You might start as a researcher or studio assistant and work your way towards filling in when a regular announcer is on vacation. |
