How To Become A Sports Broadcaster
If you are keen to become a sports broadcaster, then you will need a good speaking voice and the ability to commentate quickly and easily on changing events. This is not as easy as it sounds! You will need to keep a running commentary going even when nothing appears to be happening in order to keep listeners interested in your broadcast. To become a sports broadcaster, you would benefit in having a strong interest in a range of different sports and be familiar with rules, gameplay, terminology, and the names of the players and/or horses, dogs, or whatever you may be covering. A good memory for information would be a great asset since you will need to be able to give a quick resume of a sportspersons' career history, teams they have played with in the past and any other relevant information. All of this needs to be drawn upon at a moment's notice if you are to successfully become a sports broadcaster.
Some retired sportsmen and women have successfully made the transition to sports broadcasting. This variety of experience is not available to everybody, but you should at least be very familiar with common sports such as baseball, golf, tennis, and football and athletics. Most broadcasters have graduated with a bachelor's in communications, journalism, or broadcasting. Some have graduated from specialist, vocational broadcasting school. If you have a particular radio or TV channel that you want to work for, make sure that you speak with human resources to find out which schools and programs they value, and which they do not. You could also benefit from experience in public speaking, maybe you have been involved in amateur dramatics or a debating society; both these types of experience should help your application and career. Entry level roles include production assistant or researcher. |
