How To Become A Manicurist

Though doing your own nails is a good start, there's more you need to accomplish before you can become a professional manicurist. Education paves the way to passing the examinations set forth by state boards, and only then will you be properly licensed to practice your art.

Many cosmetology schools across the country offer concentrations in manicure arts, allowing you the opportunity to learn the theory and practical skills necessary to succeed. These are often intensive programs, with graduation frequently occurring in a matter of months, and you learn in a variety of environments, from traditional classrooms and controlled labs, to professional salons for your practical experience.

In order to become a manicurist, you will need to pass both a written and practical examination as required by your state's requirements. This allows you to receive a license to practice in your state of choice. But what exactly does that mean? What does a manicurist actually do?

As well as giving manicures and pedicures, manicurists are proficient in applying and removing artificial nails, administering nail art, and specialized treatments such as nail wraps. You will also be required to effectively demonstrate competent customer service skills, since being in such close contact with clients will necessitate your ability to communicate with a wide range of people.

Having your license doesn't mean that you stop learning, however. Constantly changing trends means you need to stay informed with new techniques, so that you can offer the best service to your customers. Education is an ongoing process when you become a manicurist, but that kind of approach makes you a valuable commodity in today's job market.
