How To Become A Food Critic
What does a food critic do? If you would like to become a food critic you must be as interested in writing about food as you are in eating it. The food critic's job is to give the world his or her opinion on a particular restaurant, café, shop, food manufacturer or other food outlet. Critics visit these places, taste the food, pass judgment on it and then make their views known by having them published in some way – in print, on the Internet, on TV or radio.
What education will help me become a food critic? As a food critic you will need to know a lot about food, from buying, preparing and cooking it to what is seasonal and where it grows. You also need to be familiar with a wide range of foods, from different places and cultures, and be knowledgeable about the restaurant business and the way in which commercial kitchens operate.
You can learn the basics of all of this by taking a certificate or degree program in a subject such as the culinary arts, catering or Le Cordon Bleu. Each of these programs focuses on the theory and practice of cooking and will also introduce you to a wide range of different cuisines from around the world.
You can build on this formal education through hands-on experience gained through working in the food industry, by reading about food and dining whenever you can, and by experimenting with new eating experiences when dining out or cooking at home.
In addition to the above, if you want to become a successful food critic, you should be a good writer. Think about taking a creative writing course to help you develop a style that is amusing and entertaining as well as being informative, accurate and clearly written. |
