How To Start A Bakery

What is involved in starting a bakery?
A bakery is one of the few businesses where the people who actually make the product are often the same as the ones who do the selling and also take care of all the other aspects of the business. To run a successful bakery therefore, you need to have exceptional baking skills but also be knowledgeable about the business aspects of the venture.

If you are interested in starting a bakery, start by doing some serious research and reflection. You should be able to answer the following questions:

Do you already have the necessary cooking and business skills or will you need to gain some qualifications or work experience first?

What sort of bakery do you want to run? Will you focus on specialty breads or do you prefer cake decorating?

Where will you base your business and is there any competition in the location you have chosen?

Have you created a business plan including details of how much you will have to spend on property, equipment, staff and materials; estimates of potential sales and profit margins?

What education can help in this process?
Before starting a bakery you can learn all the necessary cooking and catering skills you will need by taking a certificate or degree program in baking and pastry skills. This will teach you how to make and decorate different kinds of breads and cakes, plus kitchen management, cost control and food hygiene, amongst other things.

An associate's or bachelor's degree would also include the subjects that would prepare you for a management role, whether in your own business or someone else's e.g. sales and marketing, advertising, finance, accounts and personnel management.
