How To Start A Catering Business
If you want to start a catering business, you will need both culinary skills and business acumen, assuming that you will not be hiring other staff at the beginning to carry out these roles for you. Some culinary schools offer programs, which cover both of these aspects of education combined. You could also study the programs separately; doubling your period of training and of course the cost of your education. Before you start your catering business, or training for it, you need to think about what your objectives are. The more complex the size and type of your ambition, the more training you will need - think of it like building a house. A large grand house will need stronger and deeper foundations that a one story building. Likewise, if you intend to cater for exclusive weddings and executive business functions with hundreds of people to feed, you will need more training than if you were making carry out sandwiches for office workers at lunchtime.
The basics of catering schools are the same; you will need to learn about safe food handling, public and personal hygiene, fresh produce selection, portion and stock control, and basic cooking methods such as broiling, boiling, frying and steaming. If you are intending to specialize in catering on a customer's premises, you will also need to consider safe food transportation and reheating methods. Many catering businesses use their own equipment to do this, which also requires transportation and set-up. You will need to learn about menu planning in order to choose items that can be pretreated and will not spoil with reheating. Your preparation to start a catering business should also include business skills such as budgeting, planning, accounting, and promotion. |
