Construction Management Schools
Construction management schools train students with building trade or previous unrelated supervisory experience to oversee the operations and all phases of a construction or public works project -- large, medium, or small -- from initial design to client sign-off. Graduates move into supervisory positions with major construction companies, independent building firms, small contractor operations, and government public works or utility departments.
Many construction management schools offer comprehensive programs that cover project management and planning along with advanced coursework in business processes, human resource management, budgeting, and materials procurement. Consequently, management grads may be asked to ensure quality control on a construction project, hire additional personnel when necessary or lay off poor workers, oversee and maintain job-site security and safety, and work with the contracts and cost-control departments to see that the job is completed on time and within financial limits.
Degrees and College Courses in Construction Management Construction management schools and colleges offer a wide range of curriculum in the field, ranging from associate's to master's degrees in construction management and engineering. Some schools offer courses in international construction management for student who hope to work for large-scale contractors who work on civil engineering, refinery, factory, roads, and other infrastructure projects abroad.
Students can also focus their construction management skills on building code enforcement, power technology, electrical engineering, surveying, or accounting. Schools offer classes in both campus-based and online modalities, allowing for full and part-time students in the trades. Depending on the school or program, students may take classes in intermediate or advanced mathematics, spreadsheet and forecasting software, and business. |
