Construction Schools

There are many kinds of construction and building trade schools at your disposal. Depending on whether you wish to specialize in one area of the construction trade -- plumbing, electrical, carpentry, framing and finishing, or painting -- or receive a general overview and solid foundation, construction schools have certification and degree programs to fit your need.

Many students seek a general overview of building codes and trades, contracting expertise, and other vocational programs that support professionalism in the construction industry. Construction schools also offer courses in building design, project oversight, customer relations, contract bidding, and property management.

If you already know you preferred area of construction expertise, you can find schools that specialize in carpentry, plumbing and pipefitting, tile and masonry, lath and plaster, contractor licensing preparation, and more. There are campus-based and online construction trade schools, full-time programs and self-paced part time classes.

Working in the Construction Trades
Many people plan on working as independent contractors, but others prefer taking apprenticeships with trade unions if they want to advance in the use of heavy equipment or work on large civil engineering projects like waterways, bridges, commercial buildings, and highways.

Construction schools can prepare you for work as a boilermaker, brickmason, carpenter, carpet and flooring specialist, cement and driveway mason, glazier, drywall repairer and installer, insulation specialist, painter and paperhanger, stucco and plaster laborer, roofer, sheet metal worker, electrician, building code inspector and examiner.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, carpenters enjoy the most occupational independence among construction trades workers. One third of all working carpenters in the nation are self-employed.
