Mechanical Drafting Degrees
Mechanical drafting is a subfield of the larger drafting profession, focusing on completing drawings of mechanical devices, instruments, and machinery that shows assemblers and clients the operational details and dimensions. Colleges and technical institutes offer specialized, accelerated training programs for individuals planning to enter the profession.
Specialized tasks performed by mechanical drafting specialists include the development of dies, tools, assemblies, and controls, following sketches and specifications outlined by their employer or client. Mechanical drafters also work on full-size blueprints, schematics, orthographics, and angle views to illustrate the working details as well as potential flaws before parts and machines go into production.
Mechanical drafting programs can be specialized, leading to certifications or diplomas, or can be comprehensive undergraduate degree programs. Students can expect to learn work with architect's scales, curves, plotter printers, scanners and digitizers, computer-assisted design software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks CAD, Bentley Navigator; and PTC Pro/Mechanica), database software, and optical character readers.

Mechanical drafting degree programs focus on courses in design, engineering and technology, building and construction, and mathematics.
