How To Become A Fabric Stylist
What does a fabric stylist do? If you want to become a fabric stylist, you will find yourself playing a pivotal role in the fashion and design industries. Your job will be to act as the essential, connecting link between the creative and financial sides of the business. You will be responsible for making sure that the fabrics your company produces are a hit on the high street by being aware of what is currently fashionable and by predicting future trends. Using this information you will be responsible for influencing the selection of both color and pattern in the fabric design process, and for coordinating this with production and eventually sales.
What education will help you become a fabric stylist? Fabric stylists need to know about the creative and technical sides of textile design as well as the various business-related aspects of the fashion and design industries. A strong interest in design, together with creative flair, are basic requirements; the ability to grasp the 'big picture', communicate well and work as part of a team are also essential. You can learn about these things by taking one of the courses for fabric styling that are available at different schools and colleges across the country.
A typical course will include all or most of the following topics: textile production (including printing, weaving and knitting of fabrics); technical properties of fibers, yarns, dyes and finishings; the economics of the textile industry; drawing and sketching; art and fashion history; presentation board skills; market research techniques; sales and marketing; advertising; business management; communications skills and computing.
If you want to become a fabric stylist it would be to your advantage to take one of the certificate, associate's or bachelor's degree programs at a fashion design school. |
