How To Become A Video Editor

Behind the flash of every television news clip, the sharp images of a successful rock video, or a corporate training video that catches the eye of the HR manager you'll find the dedicated work of a talented video editor. Video editors study the length of shot video, then cut and splice it for the perfect effect that moves the viewer. They have a keen eye, understand how narrative works, and make directors look good. If you've decided to become a video editor, there are dedicated academies, art schools, colleges, and universities offering AA, certification, BS, BA, and MA degrees leading to key jobs in this profession.

Getting Down to Work
Although there are graduate and undergraduate programs galore, you don't necessarily have to spend a lot of time in school to become a video editor. Many trade schools and community colleges offer hands-on video editing training in programs you can complete in 18 months or less. Editing is often taught at entertainment art schools and academies, and there are 30-week intensives that can prepare you for entry-level work at post-production facilities and studios. Many programs will direct the composition of an editing reel or videotape that shows studios your level of competency. Be sure to learn on both traditional editing decks, and state-of-the-art computer-based editing systems.

Finding Your Place
Most video editors end up in film and television. But trained video editors can secure plenty of work outside of Hollywood, too. Editors are needed by private companies to produce promotions and training videos. They are also hired by educational facilities and public agencies, such as city and county governments, which rely upon videos extensively in their day-to-day operations.
