Cinematography Schools

With camcorder prices constantly dropping and video editing software constantly becoming more advanced, just about anyone can direct and produce a solid movie. Creating a "great" movie, however, is a bit more involved. This is why amateur videos online are typically free while Hollywood features cost money for access. If you are content uploading your work to sites like YouTube, then read no more. However, if you want to pursue a professional career as a cinematographer or director and get paid for your efforts, you would be wise to pursue formal education. While not always mandatory, cinematography schools not only provide you with the training and background required for success, but you can also make important connections through alumni, professors, and even fellow students.

What Cinematography Schools Can Teach You

Through cinematography training at the associate's, bachelor's, or master's level, you cover a broad range of methodologies and techniques specific to directing, editing, and filming. Typical courses might explore:
  • Composition
  • Lighting
  • Framing
  • Special effects
  • Make-up
  • Scenery
  • Video editing
In addition to the above areas, you also cover proper equipment maintenance, camera operation, videography, film processing, and increasingly, computer technology.

Career Options after Cinematography Schools

After graduating from programs, many cinematographers work directly with established television, video, and motion picture studios, filming content for a broad range of different audiences. Others work outside of the established Hollywood system, producing independent films, documentaries, or advertising commercials. Whether you decide to work as a freelancer or with an established studio, however, for potential employers or clients to take you seriously, it pays to have at least some level of formal training under your belt. The entertainment industry is notoriously competitive, so the more education you can complete, the better your job prospects become.
